Modern Foreign Languages

  • Intent

Here at Irlam and Cadishead Academy, we aim to make our MFL lessons fun and engaging which enables all students to become proficient communicators in the French language. We do this by stimulating pupils’ lasting curiosity and we create an atmosphere in which the pupils want to learn. Opportunities are provided to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through authentic resources, as well as the Pearson Edexcel course book, which we follow. At ICA we encourage positive attitudes to learning a modern language and to speakers of that language, and a sympathetic approach to other cultures and civilisations. We acknowledge and welcome speakers of other languages from all over the world within our school community, ensuring that we learn from their culture and foster their need to learn English as a foreign language. Furthermore, it has been noticed that learning another language can greatly improve long-term memory and can reduce the risk of dementia in later life.

  • Impact

Our team strives to foster and encourage a lasting enjoyment and appreciation of Modern Languages and their associated culture and traditions. Students will be assessed against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that have been mapped so that the vast majority of students are working at or exceeding age expected learning which will allow them to be successful at KS3 and beyond. By the end of KS3, students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them succeed with the requirements of the Pearson Edexcel GCSE course, whilst at the same time providing students with an engaging and challenging curriculum.
