A high quality geography education should inspire a student’s curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. At ICA we aim to equip students with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As students progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
At Key Stage 3, a broad geographical curriculum is followed, ranging from topics including development and rivers in Year 7, through coasts and population in Year 8 to climate change and urbanisation in Year 9. Geographical skills are developed and built upon throughout Key Stage 3.
Students opting to study geography at KS4 will be provided with the opportunity to further deepen their knowledge and understanding of the subject. By end of KS4, students will be able to make connections between different geographical phenomena they have studied. Additionally, they will be able to choose and use a wide range of data to help investigate, interpret, make judgements and draw conclusions about geographical questions, issues and problems, and express and engage with different points of view about these.
 

By the end of Year 9 at ICA, our students will understand what it is to be a geographer. Students will have a curiosity and fascination in finding out about the world and its people. They will have developed a passion and commitment to the subject. Our students will have developed an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like. They will have a holistic understanding if the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected, and how human and physical environments are interrelated. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing a diverse range of places and people, now and in the future.
Our students will have an extensive core of geographical knowledge and vocabulary, and will communicate this, in a variety of way, routinely. They will have a good spatial awareness, and be able to use a wide range of maps effectively to investigate places routinely. They will be able to carry out increasingly complex, independent geographical enquiry, ask their own relevant questions, make sense of geographical data, think critically about different views, and justify their own view in reaching conclusions.
